Camden Market: Exploring the Unique Charm

A large crowd visits Camden Market

Camden Market offers a unique experience that combines an eclectic mix of over 1,000 unusual and unique shops, bars, and cafes.

While we have visited London numerous times this was our first visit to Camden Market. We visited on the weekend so it was extremely crowded but crowds added to the vibrance of the experience. We really enjoyed looking at the very unique products in the various stalls.

This iconic market is a great way to spend a half day, immersing yourself in the creative offerings.

    History of Camden Market

As with everything else in London you’d expect to hear that Camden Market’s history goes back hundreds of years, but that’s not the case. Camden Lock Market is located by the Regent's Canal and the area was populated with businesses related to the canal. By the early 1970s, the canal trade had faded and the businesses were gone. A small arts and crafts market sprung up in the area and it gained popularity among London's counterculture and Punk Rock communities.

In 1991 architect John Dickinson designed a three-story indoor market hall on the site of the first outdoor market.

The growth continued in 2006 when a large indoor market hall was constructed in a yard between the Camden Lock Market and the Stables Market that was previously used for open-air stalls.

While the market continues to change and modernize it holds onto its original roots and the funky vibe continues.

How to Get to Camden Market

Camden Market is easily accessible by public transportation.

We took a bus and enjoyed the tour through various neighborhoods on the way. To get there via bus, you can take routes 24, 27, 29, 31, 46, 88, 134, 168, 214, and C2. which all stop close to the market.

If you prefer the underground, simply take the Northern Line to Camden Town station. The market is a short walk away from the station, and you'll be greeted by the vibrant energy of the area as soon as you step out.

    Camden Market highlights

While wandering Camden Market you might not even realize that it is actually comprised of numerous different markets

    • Camden Lock Market

A hub of alternative fashion, handmade jewelry, and vintage clothing. We really could have spent all day wandering here. This is definitely the place if you are looking for something unique to bring home to family or friends.

We are FareDrop customers and love it, they send airfare sales for your home airport right to your inbox. It’s great!

    • Stables Market

This is the one market where it’s obviously different than the other markets. They have kept many of the horse stalls and it definitely has the feel of a stable. This market has more of a flea market feel with unique but slightly lower-end items available.

    • Hawley Warf

While Hawley Warf has a bit more of a regular mall feel its location directly along the Regent's Canal and the industrial feel of the buildings keeps the true Camden Market vibe.

Some of the unique attractions at Hawley Warf include the Back in Time exhibit - the largest collection of Back To The Future memorabilia in Europe. There is also a kids’ theme park, a theater, and even a boxing club.

    • Buck Street Market

Buck Street Market is the first eco-conscious market in the UK, made of 88 recycled shipping containers. It is dedicated to reducing waste by generating energy from its food waste, which produces electricity for the market. The market is on three levels and contains over 80 independent stores and restaurants. It also contains a rooftop garden, which hosts yoga classes, workshops, and other entertainment.

    Food at Camden Market

Camden Market has literally every type of cuisine. Here are a few of the more interesting ones:

    • Hans & Gretel - All kinds of candy with Hungarian funnel cakes and ice cream inside a fanciful shop

    • Chin Chin Labs - Nitro Ice Cream with a wide variety of toppings. Toppings include: Tonka Bean, Burnt Butter Caramel, Valrhona Chocolate

    • Arepazo Brothers - Arepazo Brothers specialize in Venezuelan wraps made from 100% corn flour bread.

    • Meat Point - Meat Point features Argentinian-Style Smoked Beef and Chicken. The meat is cooked for 12 hours then smothered in various sauces.

    • Oli Baba's - They specialize thick, crispy fries covered in delicious and colorful sauces.

    • The Prince Albert Camden - Many of these other recommendations are food carts but if you are looking to sit down and enjoy a classic British pub meal then The Prince Albert is a great choice.

    Weekend Crowds at Camden Market

While Camden Market's bustling atmosphere is part of it’s appeal, it is essential to be prepared for the crowds, especially on weekends. If you prefer a more relaxed experience, consider visiting on weekdays or arriving early in the morning to beat the peak hours.

Be Cautious of Pickpockets and Petty Thieves

As with any popular tourist destination, Camden Market attracts its share of pickpockets and petty thieves. While this absolutely shouldn't prevent you from visiting, it's important to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect your belongings. Keep your bags and valuables secure, avoid displaying expensive items, and keep an eye on your surroundings.

Viewing the Camden Locks and Regent’s Canal

Regent’s Canal is baked into the DNA of Camden Market. After a busy stroll through the shops, it’s wonderful to take a leisurely stroll along the canal towpath and watch the boats passing through the iconic Camden Locks.

You can even take a guided boat tour of the area. Here’s a link to a Camden Canal boat tour with great reviews.

    Nearby Attractions to Explore

After soaking in the vibrant ambiance of Camden Market, there are several nearby attractions worth visiting:

Primrose Hill: This nearby hilltop park is famous for its breathtaking views of London's skyline. The Royal Park is located 100 feet above sea level and the trees are kept low to not obscure the view.

Regent's Park: Originally a royal hunting ground, Regent’s Park is a popular recreation area offering an artificial lake, stunning gardens, tennis courts, children's playgrounds, and the London Zoo.

The Roundhouse: This performing arts and concert venue is located in a former railway engine shed in the Chalk Farm area of London. The venue has attracted legends like Bob Dylan and Patti Smith and has a constantly changing lineup of performers. You can check their website here.

I really wish we had discovered Camden Market on previous trips to London. It has such a unique and edgy vibe and is filled with unique gifts and fun restaurants.

Next time we visit London we’ll bring an empty collapsible suitcase so we can purchase more unique items and take them on the plane home.
